From the Blog: Happy Labor Day
“All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity.”
–Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Happy Labor Day, Lakelanders. I know we’re all still keeping a close eye on Hurricane Dorian, hoping and praying it stays off the coast of Florida and other states as well. Our hearts go out to the people of the Bahamas, who were hit hard by this massive storm.
Monday is the 125th anniversary of Labor Day being celebrated as a national holiday — a day where we celebrate American workers and their critical contributions to the strength and well-being of our nation. Our economy is only as strong as the people — the workers — who are part of it. From our city employees to those who work in the private sector, nonprofits, education, health care and other sectors, our Lakeland workforce plays a huge role in making this community such a great place to live, work and raise a family.
I am committed not only to seeing economic growth here in Lakeland but to working with employers to create opportunities for workforce development in our city. For the past several years, I’ve had the privilege of being a guest speaker at Lakeland’s Summer Leadership Program for young professionals. I always leave encouraged and inspired by the talented group of employees representing many organizations in Lakeland, taking the time to further develop their leadership skills.
As we celebrate Labor Day, it’s exciting to think about the future of Lakeland and the opportunities ahead for the people of our city. Happy Labor Day! —Chad
